Snapshots & backups
What is a snapshot?
A snapshot is a full point-in-time image of your VPS disk, taken while it runs. Use it before risky changes: OS upgrades, app migrations, kernel changes, or a reinstall.
Take a snapshot
Control panel → your VPS → Snapshots → Create. Name it clearly (before-nginx-upgrade) and wait for it to complete.
Restore
Panel → Snapshots → choose one → Restore. The VPS reboots into that exact state.
WARNING
Restoring overwrites the entire disk — anything written after the snapshot is lost. Make a fresh snapshot first if in doubt.
Clone
You can deploy a new VPS from a snapshot to test changes without touching production.
Snapshot vs backup
| Snapshot | Backup | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fast, block-level | Slower, file-level |
| Portable | Same provider | Restore anywhere |
| Best for | Quick rollback | Disaster recovery |
INFO
Snapshots live on the same storage platform. For real disaster recovery, also copy important data off the server (S3, another provider).
